Sun Safety

Apply sunscreen at least one half hour before exposure to sun. Re-apply sunscreen regularly. Even waterproof formulas last only up to 80 minutes in the water, and then need re-application. Avoid the sun between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. This is when the rays are strongest. Always use a broad spectrum sunscreen, one that blocks out UVA and UVB rays. Self-Tan does NOT contain sunscreen, so make sure you apply sunprotection before going outdoors. Exfoliators, such as AHAs and Retin-A require sun protection on a daily basis. Use moisterizers and foundations that contain sunscreen protection. There is no such thing as a "safe tan", unless it's applied from a tube.

The Facts

  • Melanoma is the most frequent cancer among women aged 25 to 29, and second only to breast cancer in women aged 30 to 34.

What to look out for

Anything unusual, especially a change in the size or color of a mole or dark spot.

Also look out for any spot or growth that continues to itch, hurt, crust, scab, erode, or bleed, or an open sore that lasts for more than four weeks, or heals and reopens.
