Q: With summer coming up, I really want my feet to be ready for sandals, but I hate the idea of going to a salon for a pedicure. Is there anything I can do at home?
If you aren't thrilled by the idea of paying someone to see your feet, you'll love these easy tips for an at-home pedicure. All you need are a few supplies and your favorite color of nail polish, and you are minutes from sandal-ready toes !
For starters, you'll need a basic manicure/pedicure kit that has clippers, small scissors (for nails or dry bits of skin), a file or emery board, and an orange stick (for pushing back cuticles). All of these tools are indispensable for a professional looking pedicure.
If you have old polish on your nails, remove it with a gentle nail polish remover, and then wash your feet with mild soap and warm water. If you have dry skin or any rough spots, use a pumice stone, loofah, or a lotion with loofah or pumice bits to gently exfoliate them away. If you use a lotion, be sure to only apply it to your skin and not to your nails as it will interfere with your nail polish's ability to adhere to your nails. If your nails are long or uneven, cut (always straight across) or file (one direction only to prevent splitting and peeling) them to the length and smoothness you want, then very gently push the cuticles back using your orange stick wrapped in cotton. |
